L'ANZA Healing Color: To Heat Or Not To Heat

This week, L'ANZA LifeStyle addresses the burning question: Can you use heat to process L’ANZA Healing Color?

Because L'ANZA utilizes exclusive Color Attachment Technology, it does not require heat at anytime during the process. Therefore, L’ANZA DOES NOT recommend the use of heat during Healing Color processing!

So why do colorists like to turn up the degree?

Doesn’t heat shorten the processing time?

Using heat to shorten the processing time will actually sacrifice the development of the color molecule, which may result in uneven results or dull, lackluster haircolor. It may also cause haircolor to fade more quickly, or off-tone. L'ANZA's processing times fall in line with most standard professional color brands, so there's no need to rush! You may get your client in and out of your chair faster, but they may not be leaving with the gorgeous color you promised.

Doesn't resistant gray hair respond best to heat processing?

L'ANZA Healing Color provides even gray coverage and fabulous shine - no heat required! Before hitting the dryer, try adjusting your formulation first, using the suggestions below.

1) Make it a double (NN). The Ultra Natural Series (NN) was specifically developed with gray coverage in mind. Use this series to get your client to their desired target color easily, with maximum longevity.

The Gray Forumlation Chart (pictured above) is an extremely helpful tool to optimally formulate using the NN series. It can be found in your Healing Colorist's Technical Guide or Wall Chart.

2) Adjust the volume. It can be as simple as changing the volume of your Cream Developer. Instead of 20 Volume, try 30 Volume instead. With our six dedicated developers and versatile 3-in-1 system, your formulations can easily be modified using one tube of color!

This Summer: L'ANZA Goes BRONDE!

Temperatures are on the rise, and L'ANZA LifeStyle has the goods on the sizzling summer trend - going "bronde."

Part blonde, part brown, "bronde" was originally an ideal way to save money between salon visits. Instead of the usual all-over lightening, blondes camouflaged outgrowth by beginning with a darker base and adding more highlights. The trend has since been co-opted by celebrity brunettes looking for a perfect sun-kissed shade. Fashion, style, and beauty blog Stylelist (http://www.stylelist.com/) recently reported on the phenom in their post Brunettes Go.

Now you and your clients can get the bronde effect with L'ANZA Healing Color! This trendy technique creates natural highlights, with a palette ranging from brown to cool blonde, without reds. Strategic color placement provides excellent durability, without worry of the menacing line of demarcation creeping up!

Ready to get started?

Our bronde model (pictured left) started with an existing Level 6G. Entire head was toned with a Translucent Healing Color Formula of equal parts 5N (Medium Natural Brown) and 4CG (Dark Copper Golden Brown).

Highlights use TWO formulas:

Pale Blonde - 1 part Decolorizer with 2 parts 20 Volume Cream Developer

Dark Blonde - 1 part 100V (Ultra Light Violet Blonde) with 2 parts 40 Volume Cream Developer

1. Beginning in the section below the ears, place random pairs of back to back foils; vary angles to create a natural look.

From the scalp to mid-shaft, use the Dark Blonde formula.
From mid-shaft to ends, use the Light Blonde formula.
Use "erratic diffusion" brush strokes to create irregular peaks and valleys within each foil, alternating patterns each time.

2. In areas above the ears place random single foils using a skip-weave technique and the Dark Blonde formula. Be sure to leave a small amount of natural hair at the top of the head to "spill over" the highlights.

3. Process for recommended time. Cleanse, condition, and STYLE.

L'ANZA Supports Our Troops At The Playboy Mansion!

Amy Freudenberg is one busy lady! When she's not working with Salon Consultants at Maka Beauty Systems, Amy is styling fashion shows, photo shoots and other local celebrites in her hometown of Chandler, AZ. This time Amy takes her styling talents to Beverly Hills for a charity event at the infamous Playboy Mansion.

This May I packed up my styling bag of tricks and headed to the Stars & Stripes Charity Event held at the Beverly Hills Playboy Mansion! I was thrilled to be able to participate as a hair stylist at this event, with proceeds benefitting veterans wounded during conflicts in Iraq and Afganistan.

I caught the staff shuttle at the Beverly Plaza Hotel and arrived at the Playboy Mansion at 8:30am. The hair and makeup team were setup in the mansion's gameroom, which houses Hugh Heffner’s amazing collection of memorabilia, along with classic arcade games and a pool table. The amazing 15-person team of body paint artists were already hard at work in an outdoor tent creating pin-up style looks inspired by the 1940's-50's era military. As part of the hair styling team, my job was to create upstyles consistent with the event's theme, while incorporating the vintage military hats supplied by the body paint team.

For my 4 models, I first applied Healing Strength’s Neem Plant Silk Serum to ensure my finished look was silky and shiny. Next, I liberally applied Healing Style Design F/X and Spray Gel before setting each style with a 1” barrel curling iron. After each model's body paint look was complete, I pinned curls in the desired style, sprinkling Powder-Up Texturizer between each section, and then spraying each model with Ultimate F/X to make sure each style would last throughout the big night.

Next it was off to the party! Hugh Hefner, and girlfriend Crystal Harris, kicked off the festivities. I mingled with David Hasselhoff, Verne Troyer, Tara Reid, while enjoying a fantastic buffet with a complete sushi table, Italian spread and delicious desserts.

I will never forget my day at the world's most famous mansion!

Happy Birthday, L'anza!

L'anza Avery White - just two weeks before her 7th birthday!

When stylist and salon owner Kari-Lynn White became pregnant with her first child, she chose to keep the name choice a secret. As a stylist behind the chair, she could not avoid the daily bombardment of inquiries from clients about the mystery name of her newborn.

One day, one of those clients was looking at Kari-Lynn's retail shelf of L'ANZA Healing Haircare, and jokingly asked if she was going to name her baby L'anza. This was not previously on the short list, but she and her husband Wade both loved the idea and decided to go with it! And on May 13, 2003, the Whites welcomed L'anza Avery to the family.

While she's not being completely adorable, little L'anza loves doing hair at her mom's salon in Lander, Wyoming, and has been doing so since she could walk. As she turns the big 7 this week, we'd like to wish her a very happy birthday - one L'ANZA to another.

Friday, April 30 began the highly anticipated 6th Annual L'ANZA Global Forum, hosted at the luxurious beachfront Loews Hotel in Santa Monica. Over 180 qualifying L'ANZA devotees from all over the world gathered to enjoy recognition for the tremendous achievements in their respective territories.

This year's theme: Healing Destination - Modern resort-style, with a distinct Polynesian flavor.

Welcome to Healing! Education and Training Managers Barbara Dauth and Donn Fincher greeted arriving guests with CEO David Berglass and L'ANZA Brand Manager, Jamie Wing.

Pictures, please! Before grabbing a snazzy beach bag full of specially-designed L'ANZA goodies, everyone enjoyed a gourmet lunch and was then ushered into a flurry of tiki heads, leis, straw hats and grass skirts. The Welcome Wagon ensured no one escaped a photo op. "Smiles, everyone please - smiles!"

Friday night - THE WHITE PARTY. In keeping with that modern resort feel, guests came out to the pool for a cool Southern California gathering - white attire requested. Everyone mixed and mingled, speaking the international language of L'ANZA. After a delicious buffet, a troupe of exotic Tahitian performed live music and elaborate firedancing!

First on Saturday's agenda: A mid-morning roundtable discussion with the most diverse group of L'ANZA users yet. Attendees from Norway to North Carolina connected to address "The New Normal" - the evolution of our industry and how L'ANZA is taking control.

Next up: Santa Monica Scavenger Hunt. 19 teams bustled about the Santa Monica Pier, in pursuit of treasures to check off their list.

Sunday evening, guests gussied up for the annual L'ANZA Awards Ceremony - an elegant dinner was served during presentations of upcoming L'ANZA excitement, and awards to our top achievers.

David Berglass presented the Fastest Dollar Growth Award to Columbia Beauty Supply in the US, with L'ANZA Sweden achieving international honors. Also receiving awards for Fastest Healing Color Growth, Beaches Beauty Supply in the US, and Hinojosa Beauty Supply taking away the international prize in the same category.

And our Top Salon Consultant performers for 2009 are:

And no L'ANZA event would be complete without a show-stopping presentation from our Creative Team. Stunning models glistening in white bikinis and drapy sarongs strutted down the catwalk, showcasing a kaleidoscope of luminous Healing Color and hair designs, healed, sealed, and protected by L'ANZA.

L'ANZA would like to thank absolutely everyone involved in making this weekend such an incredible event. It was an amazing experience for all of us and we hope to see you all again next year!

Live From Hollywood...Here's L'ANZA!

On April 19, L'ANZA teamed up with Los Angeles-area distributor, Sweis, Inc., to present our daring new Collection "On the Fringe".

Seasonably fabulous weather created the ideal landscape for mimosas and goodies on the patio at the boutique Sunset Tower Hotel. Guests sipped and nibbled by the pool while anticipating the arrival of Creative Team Member Matt Swinney and Healing Colorist, Emily Manco.

Following an introduction by L'ANZA Business Development Manager Adam Taoatao, Matt Swinney kicked off the show with the modern, confident Forefront design, styled on a gorgeous coppery redhead. Alongside Matt, Emily Manco talked L’ANZA Healing Color.

Emily discussed the unlimited color palette possibilites and addressed technical nuances of our color, all while transforming a model suffering from intense box color abuse. Matt then got into Outskirt, a classic bob with a sleek and sexy shape, and finished his set with edgy, Unbound, while Emily continued to wow with artistic placement and tons of information on the benefits of Healing Color.

The message from stage: Experiment – with the looks in L’ANZA’s collections and the healing products that help achieve those looks. As Matt and Emily took a bow and gathered their models in the back, dozens of shutterbugs followed - flashbulbs popping away. Lit perfectly by the sun beaming through the windows, the backdrop captured the intricacies of both the cutting and color techniques just displayed by the team.

According to the UK's new! Magazine, "if it's hot, it's here". This April, featured hotness includes L'ANZA, via Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan's list of makeup bag necessities. What L'ANZA can star of Britain's most beloved and longest-running series not live without? Her Healing Smooth Smoother Straigthening Balm. L'ANZA Vice President of Education & Brand Development Lawrence Salazar shares a remarkable experience at a recent advanced Healing Color program in San Diego, CA.

As many of us know from either participating or attending an industry event, having appropriate models is vital to a program's success. This particularly held true at a recent L’ANZA Educator training hosted by Spectrum Salon Services in Lemon Grove, CA. Our focus for this class: advanced color techniques with Healing Color, including gray coverage and corrective color. You would think dozens of women would leap at the chance to cover unruly grays or address their outgrowth, yet we still found ourselves with empty slots to fill. So I took to the neighborhood to see who I could find on short notice.

Armed with a stack of flyers, I located a busy Starbucks hoping to scout potential models. As luck would have it, I met a woman named Rebecca outside. She inquired about the flyers, and I asked if she would like to receive a free haircolor service and participate in our training. She immediately jumped at the chance, and asked if she could tell some of her friends about it.

As it turns out, Rebecca was part of a wonderful group called Rachel’s Women’s Center and Night Shelter. This shelter and its sister programs provide a continuum of services and support that includes day and night centers, a night shelter, transitional housing, low income apartments, job readiness training, and employment apprenticeships.

The next day, Rebecca brought six additional models to complete our training – all of whom had gone a long period of time since their last service. I'm happy to report that the haircolor results turned out beautifully! Everyone was so appreciative of the services and extra pampering and special attention they received, the whole experience became even that much more fulfilling. One participant, Connie, was so ecstatic about her new haircolor, tears came to her eyes. “My hair has never looked so good!” she exclaimed, “and I’ve never felt so beautiful!"

It was such a rewarding experience, the positive energy was felt by the entire class. I look forward to working with Rachel’s Women’s Center again, as well as other centers near our future trainings.

L'ANZA Post-Oscar Pow-Wow!

The winners of the 82nd annual Academy Awards have been announced, and L'ANZA LifeStyle is here with a full report on how this year's red-carpet hairstyles stacked up. We caught up with L’ANZA Education & Training Managers Barbara Dauth and Donn Fincher to get their take, with Healing Artists Daniel Benschoter and Hector Villarreal chiming in on the commentary. Action items to cover: Best/Worst Hair, Hair Trends and Oscar Style Overall. Compare notes with our panel and learn how you can achieve some of these looks with L'ANZA!

Hair Trends

Barbara Dauth and Daniel Benschoter summed up this year's Oscar hair fare into the following categories: a series of soft sweeps, long and straight or with a slight wave, and re-workings of classic upstyle shapes, either sculpted and controlled, or beautifully imperfect and tousled. Hair color was definitely understated and natural looking, with subtle highlights or accents, more dark than blonde.

Best of the Best - Tressed to Impress

It’s the OSCARS after all, so who really brought their A-game?

The consensus: Sandra, Kate, and Mo'Nique were our panel's clear favorites. Sandra Bullock’s simple and sleek side part was classic and beautiful, Kate Winslet’s understated and sultry waves screamed old Hollywood glamour, and Mo’Nique’s distinctly "coiffed" coif were all stunning representations of the different Oscar hair trends.

Also receiving raves from Donn Fincher was Cameron Diaz. “Longer, dressed to one side and on one shoulder, curvy, sexy and controlled (and that was just her hair! The gown was a stunner as well!!)…truly a ‘bombshell!’” Queen Latifah was Daniel’s favorite look of the evening. He comments, “dress was beautiful, in color and flattered her figure. a.k.a. GORGEOUS!”

Please...Send...Help...

No matter how fabulous the stylist or gorgeous the dress, sometimes the look just isn't happening.

Unfortunately this year's What Was She Thinking Award goes to everyone's favorite fashion-forward actress, Sarah Jessica Parker. Words like "upball" and "big bagel" were used to describe her upstyle, and Donn couldn't help but notice the terrible fly-aways in the front. Also receiving some question marks from Donn, was Jennifer Lopez. "What is up with the messy and unfinished look with such a spectacular dress?" Mariah Carey also got a thumbs-down from Hector Villarreal who thinks her lackluster hairstyle "really needed Powder Up Texturizer and Trauma Treatment to pump it up!”

Oscar L'ANZA-fied!

To re-create some of the dazzling Oscar styles, Barbara suggests your L'ANZA course of action.

Sandra Bullock's stunning side part had hair very straight, pulled slightly behind her ears with a little “bump” in the crown, and can easily be achieved by doing the following. First apply Smoother Straightening Balm and blow dry hair smooth. Next, apply Thermal Defense and flat iron to protect the hair from the heat and lock out humidity. (Rain was expected!) Add Powder Up Texturizer at the crown to create the “bump”, then smooth the top layers of hair. To finish, emulsify one drop of Neem Plan Silk Serum in your hands and lay over the top to add a luminous shine under the bright lights!

Kate Winslet’s waves had an off-center part and waves in equally measured arcs, well executed around the head. To get this look, blow dry with Design Cream for gentle "end control" and add a polished look to the hair. Then using a large curling iron with uniform sized sections in a brick-laid pattern, wrap each curl, and loosely pin into place. When the entire head is complete, spritz with Spray Gel, allow hair to cool and brush gently into place. Finish with Dramatic F/X for all night, gentle hold with movement and style-ease.

For Mo'Nique's very constructed upstyle, hair is very tight and close to the head with large “barrels” placed at the crown. For this look to be pretty, the hair must be in great condition or it will look dull. To maintain healthy shiny hair on chemically straightened hair Healing Moisture is the answer.

Oscar Overall

The entire panel agreed – looks were classic and elegant, but 2010 was a safe year for hair and overall fashion at the Oscars. "Dressing and significant attention were paid to ALL the hair styles" Donn says. "I believe everyone has a vision when they create a 'do for a gala occasion and also believe you want your work to be the best it can possibly be. And while we may not agree on everyone's vision or methodology, SMOOTH IS PRETTY…AND PRETTY WINS!!!"

Baby, It's (Still) Coooold Outside

It may be March, but temperatures are STILL dipping into obscenely low numbers. Even if it's getting warmer near you, you may still be dealing with winter's lingering aftermath! Ever wonder what it’s like behind the scenes of a beauty industry photo shoot? Today, L’ANZA LifeStyle draws the curtain for you of this week’s Healing Style photo shoot with a behind the scenes peek:

To provide images for our new Healing Style line, a two day shoot was planned. We captured 8 models sporting the latest L’ANZA looks fashioned by our brilliant Creative Team – led by Oscar and Wendy Bond, Matt Swinney and L’ANZA Sweden’s Johan Arvidsson.

The shoot took place at JCH Studios in Burbank where photographer, Bonnie Holland captured a variety of looks in both outdoor and indoor settings. Veronica Lane provided make-up expertise, while stylist Jocelyn Zayco polished off each look with apropos wardrobe. For the first time ever, a film crew came along to capture the shoot and the L’ANZA Creative Team demonstrating product cocktails and offering tips and tricks for using new L’ANZA Healing Style.

Prep Day: The Creative Team went to work, cutting and coloring all 8 models in preparation for the upcoming shoot. Colors ranged from sultry copper reds to deep blue blacks, with palettes chosen to enhance each model’s skin tones. The cuts framed our model’s faces and complemented their bone structures, providing the foundation to totally wearable and flattering styles that would be complete once styled with our Healing Style products!

Day One-Monday: The shoot kicked into high gear and 5 models appeared in the day’s line up. We started off with two male models, Geo and John. L’ANZA Sweden’s Johan Arvidsson styled the guys’ looks with the help of Beach Spray, Powder Up and Mega Gel. Male models are a L’ANZA first and Johan took extra care to create multiple looks ranging from daytime professional to night-on-the-town texture.

Day One brought curls and volume to L’ANZA ladies Jezlan, Yvette and Amanda. The L’ANZA team commanded a variety of shapes from loose sexy waves to tight spirals. With the aid of Daily Thickening Treatment, Design Foam and Ultimate F/X, the girl’s curls held their own while volume reached never seen before heights.

Day Two-Tuesday: The morning took on an edgy tone with model Carla rocking a chic mohawk made possible with Urban Molding Paste. Model Chriselle continued the theme by showing off blond highlights against her jet black-blue tipped hair. Chriselle’s semi-retro longer length bob was shaped expertly with Polyester.

We wrapped up the shoot on a softer side with classic Hollywood waves on redheaded model Dominique. This classic look was locked into touchable smoothness with both Design Foam and Dramatic F/X.

A Winning L'ANZA Concept

The Assignment
Last fall, L’ANZA presented a hands-on challenge to the Level III Educators. The task was to find an inspiration and conceptualize a look that represents a beautiful, healthy hair style achieved with L’ANZA Healing Haircare. The next step was to create this hairstyle on a mannequin, including all aspects of cut, color and style.

The Result
Out of 10 participants, the results were amazing! The whole group voted, and the winner was chosen: Glennda Johnston. “I wanted something classic, sophisticated and romantic,” says the artist. We agree that she achieved it!

The Prize
Glennda had the opportunity to bring her concept to life at the next L’ANZA photo shoot!

The Look
The model started with Level 8 Blonde Hair. Using L’ANZA Healing Color, Glennda created highlights through the front section with L’ANZA Decolorizer and 20 Volume Cream Developer. Foils were placed diagonally through the front, using an “erratic diffusion” technique which creates subtle, blended shades. For toning, a Translucent Color was applied using “Akoya Pearl” – a new L’ANZA Color Concept formula consisting of 10g 9G (Light Golden Blonde) + 20g 10P (Very Light Pearl Blonde). “For the cut, I did simple long layers without a lot of texturzing,” comments Glennda, “this enhances the curl and keeps the finish smooth.”

To complete the look, L’ANZA Neem Plant Silk Serum was applied to damp hair and blow-dried with a round brush. Next, sections were misted with Reflex and set with a curling iron. Lastly, the top was smoothed with a boar-bristle brush, and the ends were loosely pinned up the back. “The trick is to put a small amount of Neem Plant Silk Serum on the back of your hand. Wipe the boar-bristles through the product, and then brush the hair. This will add softness, control and shine.”

Glennda Johnston currently resides in Chardon, Ohio. As a Level III Educator, she conducts a variety of cutting and styling classes, and trains L’ANZA Level I and Level II Educators. She is also the friendly voice of the L’ANZA Healing Color Hotline, assisting colorists with formulations and product information.

On the edge, but never over-the-top On The Fringe strikes an innovative balance. It’s collection of wearable cuts flaunting a dramatic fringe that playfully sweeps the eyes and frames the face, with fluid color accentuating the forward movement of each design.

UNBOUND – Free-spirited and adventurous, this cut rocks an asymmetrical shape. Unbound can be styled to accentuate the undercut, or worn down for subtle impact. The Cluster Color Technique was used to create blended streaks of color through the hair.

Apply Polyester to damp hair. Blow dry with denman-style brush. Smooth with Neem Plant Silk Serum.

Model started with natural Level 10 Blonde.
Copper: 28g 7C with 56g Demi Cream Developer

FOREFRONT – Modern and confident, this cut accentuates forward movement with a long fringe, connecting through the back and sides. The front maintains a heavy fringe to emphasize the eyes. The Herringbone Color Technique was used for a blended look by zigzagging color along the center of the head.

L’ANZA Healing Style
Apply Design Cream to damp hair. Blow dry using fingers or flat brush. Accentuate texture with Urban Molding Paste or Spray Wax.

L’ANZA Healing Color
Model started with existing Level 6 Gold Copper.

I requested to do the last blog of the year, as I have been an avid reader of previous weekly posts, so now it’s my turn!

The past year will be remembered in many different ways. We have all felt the economic crunch and I certainly hope the worst is behind us. I have had a very busy and fulfilling year on the road with the L’ANZA Education Team. On every trip I was touched and blessed to work alongside a team with such a passion for L’ANZA, passion for their craft and a passion for learning. I feel our team has become bigger and better, which is all credit to the hard work and dedication of the corporate team under the guidance of Lawrence Salazar, Barbara Dauth, Donn Fincher, and crew! I’d like to thank you all for helping realize L’ANZA’s vision: quality educators (L’anzanistas), giving quality education. I can honestly say you make my life easy at events and shows.

Some of the fond memories I am left with in 2009: karaoke in Myrtle Beach, (pictured above right with Oscar, Educators Tim Martin and Troy Dupler on the mics) Birthday bash in Texas, caravanning through Montana, the creative training in Minneapolis, and witnessing the grand expansion of Evolution Salon (Matt, Michael and Heidi’s salon in Minneapolis). Most recently, the McAllen, Texas show was awesome, with a great turn out - thanks to Ruth and Jay! And last but not least, Glennda Johnston’s participation at our photo shoot was fantastic. Her input was invaluable to the team effort.

As with all turnings of a New Year, change is inevitable. Don’t fight it - embrace it and master it. Wendy and I face a year of a dream coming true. We have purchased a building (24,000 sq ft) in Bloomfield NJ, just 8 miles west of NYC, and in May 2010 we will be opening the Bond Academy/a L’ANZA Institute. It will be a flagship L’ANZA destination for education in a state of the art facility. We will be offering the full gamut of beauty education, cosmetology, aestheology, including full-time, part-time, graduate programs, advanced classes, and more. I am asking our education network to help us make this a successful venture by referring students in any way you can, PLEASE.

I look forward to seeing all of you sooner or later at the L’ANZA Institute for a training or event. I will keep you briefed as the journey continues.

I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions, but I carry a credo through life, “There's a right and a wrong way to do anything; you will never be blamed for doing the right thing.” Often it’s not the easiest path, but it has paved the way for me. I will leave you with that thought and wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Be careful - and if you have to drink, then WALK!

L'ANZA Educator Sherry Owen is a busy lady! In addition to being a salon owner and active Educator for local Dallas distributor Next Step Salon Consultants, she auditioned and was recently promoted to Level II-H status! This is her first blogpost for L'ANZA LifeStyle.

As a business owner in these economic times, you have to get creative. Although my salon has been blessed, it's over 2 1/2 years old, and it's important to continue getting the name out there. So my stylists and I got together and came up with a great idea for a holiday open house. The objective was to add to our customer base, and reach out and help our community at the same time. We came up with a plan to go to locally-owned businesses and ask them to join us and set up a booth at our salon to either promote their business, show their work or sell items. Rather than charging them for a boothspace, we just asked that they make a donation to a local charity we had chosen.

We had no shortage of interest, with participants ranging from a local winery, to a photographer, jewelery maker and florist. After securing 14 vendors, we placed an ad in the local paper and e-mailed our customer base. The rest was left up to flyers and the power of good old-fashioned word-of-mouth. Because we had so many businesses talking about the event, it became a huge success! A local cafe/bakery provided free food and goodies for sampling so we saved on food costs and they got their name out there to all our guests. We had several giveaways and with each registration, we had a new customer to reach. It was in November, so people were ready to start thinking about the holidays and it seemed to get people in the spirit.

Since everyone who participated was thrilled with the results, we've decided to make this an annual event! My salon and the other participants got a solid business boost, and we had a great donation for our charity. We managed to keep the event at minimal expense to ourselves and had a lot of people come through the salon that may never have. It was businesses taking care of each other, and a great experience all around. I wanted to share this great success with my L’ANZA family of stylists and salon owners and for anyone out there looking for a boost this holiday season.

L'ANZA Heals In Hair Wartime

Since 2001, Hair Wars has been pushing the envelope with its annual series of hair and fashion runway competitions. Top salons compete regionally in Chicago, Las Vegas, and Scottsdale, hoping for a slot at the national finals in Las Vegas, with all participants vying for one thing: the coveted title of "Supreme Salon".

On November 15, 2009, nightspot Wasted Space at the The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino hosted the 2009 Hair Wars National Finals, and the winner - Roni Josef Salon in Las Vegas! L'ANZA Educators and Roni Josefians Denise Swena and Jessica Taylor (pictured above, upper left) were both featured stylists at the big event.

Now, if you thought this war was just about hair - don't let the moniker fool you. Beyond creative coiffing, competitors are also judged on makeup, costumes, body paint and overall performance. After a triumph at regionals with an African Safari theme, the team's new challenge: put together a runway show with up to 10 models onstage, lasting 6-8 minutes.

Rather than going the traditional route of models-on-a-catwalk, ten fearless stylists from the three Roni Josef locations pooled together to design and choreograph their winning presentation: "Underground Club Kids". Using the 2003 film Party Monster as inspiration, stylists depicted a rave-like environment, complete with club "characters" such as The Fairy, Rainbow Bright, The School Girl, Fire, and Ice. The team was not afraid to lay it on thick - every exaggerated nuance required to capture the decadence and excess of the club scene is perfectly executed, culminating in a true piece of performance art.

L'ANZA Educator Denise Swena is extremely proud of the performance. “We had a great time and couldn't have done it without L’ANZA – especially Tight, Powder Up and Dramatic F/X!"

Congratulations to Denise, Jessica, and the whole Roni Josef team! You have clearly earned your status as "Supreme Salon"!

Searching For The Ultimate Cure

Pancreatic cancer is the most lethal cancer in the United States, with a five-year survival rate of only 5 percent. For Capelli Salon Owner and Master Color Specialist Sabina Fetter, those numbers resonate beyond just a compelling statistic - Sabina's mother is one of the 42,000 Americans diagnosed with the vicious disease.

On Thursday, November 19, Sabina gathered local Los Angeles media and neighboring Santa Clarita Valley businesses to raise consciousness about National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month (November), complete with beauty basket raffles, a bake sale and L'ANZA. For a $20 donation, visitors received an Ultimate Treatment, with 100% of the proceeds directly to Pan Can - the pancreatic cancer network, and only national organization supporting research, patients and their families, community outreach, and advocacy for a cure.

Throughout the month of November, Capelli Salon will continue offering Ultimate Treatment by donation.

On November 7, 2009, L'ANZA teamed up with VMarie Fashion for an electrifying runway show at Scottsdale Fashion Week!

L'ANZA Salon Development Educator and stylist Amy Freudenberg worked with VMarie Founder and lead designer Rickie Gonazales to create sleek and sexy looks to complement his latest collection's rich palette of colors.

To assist with the arduous task of model preparation, Amy immediately enlisted L'ANZA Educators Daniel Benschoter and Andrea Rispoli, and local L'ANZA Leaders Tracey Walker, Michelle Carr, Jennifer Hughes, and Jennifer Talbot. (pictured above with Gonzales)

Together they healed, sealed, and protected models before they sashayed down the runway in gorgeous VMarie frocks!

Hair Vice: A True Story

My name is Kristen Jenkins, and I'm a hair flipper.

Having always had a very full head of long hair, whipping and flipping it from side-to-side became my teenage way to indicate frustration, punctuate a sentence, hide from others - basically an equivalent to Linus' blue blanket. But as the gesture became an every-other-minute part of the repertoire, I noticed something funky happening to my hair. By the end of the schoolday, it looked like I styled it with Crisco.

Preparing for a trim, I sat in my stylist's chair complaining about how oily my hair had become. She politely asked if I touched it a lot. "I dunno." I replied with a flip. Caught in the act, she laughed and explained that grease from your fingers transfers onto the hair strand and can cause hair to become oily - so don't touch it. "Really? Wow. Oh, okay." acknowledged with a similar enthusiasm to receiving a flossing directive from the dentist. And much like trying to be better about flossing, I was going to try and calm down on the flippage. Yet many, many years after this revelation of hair flipping = gross, greasy hair - I still do it. All the time. I actually have to put my hair in a bun or ponytail, because I know. I can't. Stop. FLIPPING. And touching. And dragging my fingers through my hair. It's become what I call my "hair vice".

Encarta Dictionary says a vice is "an immoral or wicked habit or characteristic". Clumped under the vice umbrella with gambling, lying, and excessive drinking are lower-ranking vices like mine, which reside somewhere near biting your nails, eating the entire pint of ice cream at once, or watching "The Bachelor". These may seem low on the totem pole, but vices nonetheless.

So for some Friday fun, I surveyed several members of the L'ANZA Education Team on hair never-evers, and based on their responses it seems I'm not the only one who suffers from a hair vice. See if any of you are guilty of performing any of these don't-you-even-think-about-its below.

What’s the worst thing a person does to their hair on a regular basis that they ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NEVER DO?

Blow dry on high heat and no nozzle to direct airflow.
Pass a hot flat iron over and over the same section of hair.
Use drugstore shampoo.
Use a match to burn off split ends. (YIKES!)

L'ANZA can heal, but the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

A big thanks to everyone who responded to my query. I must admit - this list has made me feel a little bit better about my struggle. I may flip, but AT LEAST I don't use home color. ;)

Peacoats and Wellies meet barely-there bikinis with these new press hits from the United Kingdom and Brazil.

L’ANZA Powder Up Texturizer makes the news again - this time in the HAIRDRESSERS JOURNAL International (August 2009). According to the UK-published magazine, "Styling powders are taking the hairdressing world by storm!" After opening its doors six years ago, Evolution Experience Salon found itself in a bizarre quandary during these troubled times – they were growing. In an economy where businesses are closing their doors and people are scaling back, Evolution decided to go for gold, increasing their salon space by 133% and choosing to go all L’ANZA, all the time.

The Art of Retailing

For over 23 years, Louis Zeppieri has been a stylist and educator in Canada. As a Level III Educator with L'ANZA, Louis heals, seals, and protects from the progressive city of Toronto.

For hairdressers, the word “sell” has been considered our industry’s Four Letter Word. After working in many prestigious salons and visiting countless others as an educator, I’m still amazed at the fear and negativity the notion of “selling” brings to my fellow stylists.

As salon professionals, we “sell” our services day in and day out, yet repeatedly I hear the phrase “Selling has no place in a salon” or “I am an artist, not a salesperson”, coming from so many trained stylists. Would there not be a long line of potential new clients hanging on our every word if we could just utter the phrase “(insert L'ANZA product) will help you (insert desired effect), until your next appointment”...while we, snip, set, and finish? Do we not realize that on top of a potential commission, the education provided could make our jobs easier when that client returns? What makes it so difficult for us to sell the tools that help us achieve the looks we design?

I believe it all boils down to a lack of education. Not in how to style, cut, or color hair, but a lack of understanding as to why selling to your clients is important in the first place. With today’s growing demands in salon services, it only makes sense to offer your clientele the best possible insurance in maintaining the wonderful work you've done. Help your client understand what they need to keep their hair beautiful, then your clients leave the salon feeling pampered, valued, empowered, and most of all satisfied.

Think of it this way: What if you went to the doctor and asked, “What should I do to maintain or improve my health?” and your doctor shrugged and said, “Try your local pharmacy, someone there should be able to help you". When your clients do not receive a proper recommendation for an at-home hair maintenance program, you are basically sending them to the drugstore. And as those outlet stores and beauty supplies continue booming all over North America, a profitable opportunity for the stylist is thrown right out the window. And why even THINK of letting someone else consult your clients on how to achieve and maintain a style YOU created? Why not let those growing sales and happy clients be yours?

Now that you understand why you should do it, how do you do it? Easy. Take advantage of your distributors’ education staff. Have them come to your salon or attend any educational functions your distributor has to offer. They will be more than happy to help. Let them show you how to make retailing enjoyable, while giving you a better understanding on how products actually work. Talk to someone whose skills you admire. Attend seminar, lectures, and programs on sales-oriented education to help you feel comfortable with that Four Letter Word. You owe it to yourself as an artist, and to your clients. Remember, an educated client is your best customer!

So be professional, knowledgeable, profitable, artistic, and most of all - happy!

L'ANZA Gets Twitterpated

Through her experience spearheading L'ANZA's entrée into social media marketing, L'ANZA Corporate Brand Manager Holly de Rivaz shares her own version of the Complete Idiot's Guide to Twitter.

So you’ve heard of this thing called Twitter…but you’ve been avoiding it, or don’t see the point. Or maybe you’ve already joined up, but really haven’t jumped in? Well now is the time for a proper introduction to Twitter – get ready to join the conversation.

What is Twitter?
Imagine if someone combined email, blogging, chat rooms, instant messaging and viral marketing and then over 4 million unique users jumped in and started talking - that’s Twitter. In a nutshell, Twitter.com is a social networking site and microblogging tool where your communications (or “tweets”) are limited to 140 characters.

What are the benefits? So you know Twitter is huge, but how does it benefit you as a Salon or Stylist? Why should you join? Here are just a few things you can accomplish with Twitter:

1. Open communication with your clients
2. Spread awareness of your skills and attract new clients
3. Fill up available appointments in a snap by offering “Twitter-only” discounts for that day
4. Build traffic to your site or blog
5. Meet other people in the field
6. Connect with people of like interests
7. Keep your finger on the pulse of what is happening in the beauty and haircare world

The list of benefits goes on, but in short Twitter is a relationship site and the fastest way to communicate a message online to your target audience.

How do I join? So you are ready to Tweet, huh? Follow the steps below and soon you will be going from “Twitter what?” to “I read the most interesting thing on Twitter yesterday…” (step-by-step info compliments of @JoannaLord/www.yourjobstop.com):

Go to http://www.twitter.com/ and click on the “Get Started Now” button on the bottom of the screen.
Next, fill in your information including username. The most popular choice for usernames is your first and last name, but if you are a brand or a Salon definitely use that! You can also pick a name that reflects your interests like “incrediblestylistsyouwanttofollow”. (Okay - maybe not, but you get the point.) Just remember that if someone is searching for you, you want them to be able to find you so keep that in mind. Once you have filled in the boxes, click the “Create my Account” button.
Next you will be brought to the “See if your friends are on Twitter” screen. This is your opportunity to import contacts from Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, and MSN address books. Do you have client info cards with emails? Try those! You also have the option to skip this step.
Next you will land on a screen that says “Look who else is here. Start following them!” This is the time to see the big names on Twitter. Choose to follow them or skip to the next page.
Hit the Finish Button
Now you will be directed to your very own homepage and it will prompt you to compose your first tweet with “What are you doing?” Share what’s on your mind and press “update.”

Congratulations you are now a contributing member of the Twitter community!

Who should I be following? There are two schools of thought here: 1. Create an open dialogue and follow the people that are following you. 2. Follow a select group of people, but hope to be followed by way more. This is a fiercely debated topic, so see what works for you!

How do I get followed? Often times when you follow someone, they will follow you. This isn’t always true, but it’s the best way to get started. So start looking for people in your city or in the hair and beauty industry. You can find them by using the Find People function at the top of your Twitter page or Twitter Search (http://search.twitter.com/). Type in some key words and find some interesting people. You can also use Mr. Tweet (http://mrtweet.net/) for a more personal approach to finding people to follow.

What do I say? The fastest way to get un-followed is to sell, sell, sell. Remember: you want to Tweet things people actually want to read and that add value to their Twitter experience. So if you are stuck trying to answer Twitter’s famous query “What are you doing”, think about it as “What are you excited about” or “What inspires you.” Whether you are representing a brand, business, or yourself as a stylist, try tweeting about products you like, interesting industry articles or news, events you are attending, how-tos, recent press hits, valuable tools or simply ask a question. All of these are great ways to get the communication going. And remember one of the best things you can do to get involved is to listen to others and join in on their conversation.

How do I keep track of what is being said about me or to me? Since Twitter is real time conversation it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of content flying around. And if someone mentions you, of course you don’t want to miss it! Luckily there are tools to help. You can go to twhirl.com or TweetDeck.com to track what is being said about you or your brand. At L’ANZA, we use TweetDeck to ensure we don’t miss a message or relevant tweet, plus it is a huge time saver!

How do I customize my page? Click on "Settings" at the top right and then click "Design" tab. Twitter has quite a few stock backgrounds to choose from or you can upload your own. This can be a bit tricky so I turned to @sethjenks to design the L’ANZA page. The Settings area is also where you upload your photo icon – make sure it looks good when it shows up on the feed!

What are the different ways to communicate? 1. The Standard Post: This is like the first Tweet you write when you join up. It is a message seen by all following you. 2. The Reply Post is when you type @ prior to someone’s username. This message is also seen by all that are following you, but is directed at one specific user. You may be replying to what that user has just said or perhaps you are directing a comment of yours at them. 3. The Direct Message is when you want to send a private message. You can do this by either typing dm @username of the person you are messaging, or click on Direct Messages to the right of your feed and use the drop down feature. 4. The ReTweet Post– ReTweets are pretty huge because that means someone liked something enough to repeat it to their followers. To ReTweet type RT @username of person you are retweeting and then their message. Feel free to add your comments about their tweet.

So now you’re armed with the basics and ready to play. Remember: the best way to learn is by doing, so get involved and see what the buzz is about! And don’t forget to follow @lanza_haircare.

Building Your Hair Portfolio

About a year ago, I decided to take some time to build my hair portfolio. In order to do any freelance work, having a portfolio is essential. I did some investigating to find out how to go about this, and this is what I found.

The Actual Portfolio:

The standard size for a hairstylist’s portfolio is 11” x 14”. In the back, your book should have a pocket holder to house your business card. To start, stick with a book that’s classic – think basic and professional. The more serious you become, you can step up the presentation and invest in a custom-made cover or something more high-design. Whatever book you choose, the photo sleeves should be removable, so they can be replaced as needed. Your sleeves should be of archival quality. Non-acid, archival-quality sleeves will help maintain the quality and integrity of your photos and prevent fading and yellowing.

The Work:

Your portfolio is your own personal marketing tool, so it should showcase your most amazing work. You will be expected to feature professional photos - not everyday snapshots from your camera. Photo shoots can be very costly, but thankfully the internet is here to help!

Enter: Model Mayhem (http://www.modelmayhem.com/). This is a great website for hairstylists, makeup artists, wardrobe stylists, and photographers to connect. Everyone on this site is trying to build a portfolio or keep their existing one updated. The best part – it’s free! Although unlike other free social networking sites like Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/) or Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/), there is a waiting period for approval. Once you’re in, you can begin a search for photographers in your area and start connecting. You will do what they call “Test Shoots” and in exchange for your work as a stylist, the photographer will provide you with professionals proofs. This is called TFP (Trade for Proof) or TFCD (Trade for CD). Once you’ve got actual proofs, you can take them to any photo place and have them printed for your book. I find having them printed at Costco works fine and very inexpensive. After just 3 months, I had 5 great photos. I’m now able to charge for photo shoots, while continuously updating my portfolio.

And because this business is all about networking, photoshoots are an excellent way to meet other industry professionals. Perhaps that makeup artist you worked with might need a hairstyling for an upcoming event, or maybe that wardrobe stylist on your last shoot needs a new look and really likes your work. These connections can result in an exciting opportunity or even a new client - the possibilities are truly infinite! I’m now regularly working with local fashion designers and magazines, and after posting my professional work on Model Mayhem and Myspace, I’ve actually increased my clientele doing what I love to do – HAIR!

Show Me The Money! (A Donn Fincher Blog)

A long time ago I learned a crucial business lesson: if you can demonstrate a “VALUE ADD” in any given situation, it becomes something one can no longer live without. Whatever you have added value to - be it an idea, a concept, a product - that value has been added in a person's mind and heart. It's a pretty lofty proposition, but when you break it down, it’s actually quite simple. As an education person in the beauty industry, I have dedicated my career to doing just this: trying to create value in people’s minds so they NEED quality products and MUST have them to improve their existence. I want to get this idea out to as many as possible because its success is a gift unto itself, but more importantly, it directly adds to what we do as individuals, and as a company. And when you represent a quality product, if nobody ever appreciates that value, then it can never truly realize its full potential and success!

Here’s a great example: Haircolor. About 20-25 years ago there was such a thing as “better” hair colors and “lower quality” hair colors for the professional industry.

(Side note: Let me be 100% clear on this, we are the PROFESSIONAL hair industry! I will reserve my commentary on the non-professional or OTC (over the counter) end of the business at a future date.)

Fast-forward to the present: there are several “good” hair colors out there, so what makes L’ANZA HEALING HAIRCOLOR so special? The answer is so obvious to us, yet we need to “add value” in our potential customer’s minds and hearts - they haven't been "SHOWN THE MONEY"!

The single most important factor to create a VALUE ADD for this excellent product is right in the name…Healing Haircolor. When I am speaking to people in any situation - a distributor principle, Sales Consultant, educator, or even an average customer at a salon - I always tell them I represent L’ANZA Healing because we are the ONLY manufacturer that has the legitimate ability to make this claim!

I would estimate that virtually every manufacturer has at least one product dedicated to the restoration of essential proteins beneficial to hair and haircolor. My First L'ANZA Show

My First Show

CBS' Myrtle Beach Show 2009 is an event I will not soon forget! When I arrived at the model call venue on Friday evening, the energy level was already high enough to power a small town. About 75 models showed up for L'ANZA and I finally got to meet Oscar Bond. (brilliant dahling...is all I'm going to say! ) I also met Level III Educators Daniel Benschoter and Troy Dupler who were the artists working with Oscar for the show. We picked 11 models ready to be Healed by the nature of L'ANZA, and they were all beautiful with great hair! (Ahhh...If only I could pick my clients like that.)

The next day: Model Prep. Troy and Daniel were the designated colorists and finishers, and Marisa Grooms, Linda Corley, and myself were their assistants, with Oscar on for cutting. Donn Fincher and Mira West orchestrated the whole thing - they kept us on schedule, took care of us, fed us (except when the models ate our food...for real) and did an overall smashing job. We got started early and rocked models' haircolors all day long in a room with a balcony overlooking the beach...such horrible conditions! Troy and Daniel are amazing and created unique colors for all of our models using techniques from the Modern Muses Collection. I got to apply, shampoo, towel dry. Apply, shampoo, towel dry. Apply, shampoo, towel dry – Woo-hoo! It was a very busy, high energy, mind-boggling day.

Finally, Showtime - Lights! Camera! Action! Our models started showing up with their gorgeous selves, complete with perfectly Healed, Sealed, and Protected heads of hair. Hair, Makeup, Wardrobe, out the door, and it's on! The L'ANZA stage was nice, clean and simple. We had a room for 200 people with each show time lasting two hours. Each show was packed, with people sitting on the floor. Oscar was brilliant - he did several haircuts with great detail on technique, and lots of character. Oscar is a truly an inspiring person - hats off! Troy and Daniel demostrated L'ANZA Healing Color techniques and styles on stage and did a fabulous job. The Starflower technique from the Modern Muses collection was the star of the show! (This placement of color is the perfect centerpiece to any base color!) The up-styles were magnificent, with one having the hair sweep around the neck like a fur collar - you have to see it! As an assistant, I got to take care of the models, and get whatever the artists needed. I enjoyed every minute of it!

All in all, the show was fabulous. I did get a chance to walk around and observe the other brands’ and I learned that L'ANZA was the only show that didn't have a “Please DO NOT Try This At Home” disclaimer on the front of the stage. YIKES! At the L'ANZA show, people were learning techniques, not just observing them. This was one of the highlights of my career, and I'm thrilled to have been a part of it, and the L'ANZA Family. Together we are truly Healing the World - at the Top!

A special note to Donn, Mira, Troy, Daniel, Marisa, Linda, and of course, Oscar: it was a pleasure to work with each and every one of you. We make a Top Notch Team!

Practice, Play, & Perfect Your Color!

As the helpful voice at the other end of L'ANZA's Healing Color Hotline, Level III Educator Glennda Johnston always provides colorists one-stop shopping LHC assistance. Here Glennda offers up one of the secrets to her color success. She blogs to us from Chardon, OH.

Picture this: You’re standing behind the chair holding several inches of hair, freshly whacked from your client's head - maybe she asked, or perhaps it was an “oops”. Whatever the scenario, you now have the materials to create an excellent method to work with L’ANZA Haircolor: do-it-yourself hair wefts! You can use these to explore LHC's features and benefits, enhance education in your color classes, or just to play.

For example, answering the L’ANZA Healing Color Hotline, I often wonder how a stylist got a particular color result. If I can’t determine how the color was achieved, I can’t help properly correct it. So to advise accordingly, I get out my homemade natural hair wefts, create the scenario, and then correct it. Through this experimentation I have learned valuable color theory and formulations that not only help me on the hotline, but everyday behind the chair.

Natural wefts are also a great way to liven up your class experience. I recently did a color correction class where I provided each stylist a hair weft I intentionally messed up. Their job was to use LHC to correct the color. This provided a hands-on classroom environment which they loved! They also got to see the results achieved by their other classmates.

Perhaps your salon is new to our color, and hesitant to use the reds or hi-lifts because they're unsure of the tonal results. Break out your wefts and have them apply color so they can visually see the results. They immediately feel confident in formulating and converting clients to LHC.

Even if you are not teaching correction, wefts can still come in handy. Maybe your model didn't show up - no worries! You've conveniently packed an assortment of wefts for backup.

By now your likely thinking how great all those long hair clients are going to look with their new short coifs! Don't hoard all the hair - give some to Wigs For Kids (http://www.wigsforkids.org/), and save the rest. I'm sure you'll discover what a great way it is to educate yourself and others.

Glennda Johnston's D.I.Y. Hair Weft Tutorial

You will need:

Hair at least 6" in length. This will give you plenty to apply color and see true results.
Thread End Glue (found at JoAnn's Fabrics or any craft store)
Foil
Scissors

Directions for assembly:

Lay hair on foil and use enough to make a solid 1" swatch
Squeeze thread end glue across top of the cut end of the hair. Turn swatch over and apply to other side.
Press with fingers to make sure glue reaches all the hair.
Set aside to dry.
Once dry, trim glued top to look more professional.
Color Away!

FYI: I have used a hot glue gun, but find the thread end glue is much easier to work with. This glue is specifically used to stop fabric from fraying.

L'ANZA: Back To The Beach

This past weekend L'ANZA celebrated the dedication of over 100 Salon Consultants, Sales Managers, and Distributor Principles from around the world. As part of a special incentive program, qualifying individuals were invited to Southern California to be part of our "Back to the Beach" weekend, hosted at the beautiful Loew's Hotel in Santa Monica, CA.

If you were there, your weekend might have looked something like this:

Friday: Got picked up at LAX via lush black sedan and escorted to the Loew's. What a perfect view of the ocean and the Santa Monica Pier - so lovely. Doors open and Regional Education Managers Donn Fincher and Barbara Dauth are right there to welcome and direct visitors to registration. Went up to the L'ANZA area and lunch was already waiting. Got a badge along with TWO bags of L'ANZA goodies, containing L'ANZA Swim & Sun travel sizes, L'ANZA lip balm, sunblock, and a big L'ANZA Healing Color red beach towel! Took hilarious pics in front of a themed set-up to commemorate arrival. Looking forward to meeting other L'ANZA devotees at the Welcome Reception tonight. Moral imperative: must head to pool immediately - do not pass GO, do not collect $200.

Saturday: Met so many great L'ANZA people last night - nice to put faces to names and chat with others in the field. Went to the "L'ANZA Unplugged" roundtable discussion this morning, and was very inspired by all the successes touted by the accomplished panel. Absolutely amazed at the talent working for this company. Now, did someone say BEACH? Must go work on the perfect vacay tan. Tonight's hosted excursion: The Kress in Hollywood. Looked up the club's website, and it's quite the L.A. hotspot. Someone called DJ EZ is spinning. Must make sure to have camera in tow for possible stargazing and shutterbugging.

Sunday: The Kress was fantastic last night - five stories dedicated to pure fabulous, with a rooftop lounge that was all ours. Tried unsuccessfully to keep up with the Swedes. Off to 3rd Street Promenade today for mid-afternoon shopping and then Lakeside Spa for a pre-event massage. Awards Ceremony tonight, along with a runway show. The Bonds & Matt Swinney are doing the hair - expecting incredible things.

Monday - Oh what a night! Awards from CEO David Berglass and presentations from Marketing and Education. Can't wait till my customers get their hands on all the exciting new products coming our way. As predicted, The Creative Team did not disappoint. Bathing Beauties with gorgeous L'ANZA color and healed hair strolled down the catwalk - absolutely stunning! Dinner was superb. Said goodbyes to all the great L'ANZA people last night and this morning. Had such a blast - weekend was equal parts fun and informative. Time to get on a plane, exhale, and strategize how to get back next year!

Another Road To Healing

For about three years now, I've been studying Color Therapy. It is a truly holistic, non-invasive and powerful healing tool which dates back thousands of years.

What makes color so important? Within the body there are seven different energy centers connected to each color of the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. In order to maintain good health, these energy centers must work together to prevent any imbalance from happening. When an imbalance does occur, Color Therapy is used to re-balance and/or stimulate these energies.

All the colors of the rainbow have unique healing properties, and everyone brings these colors into their lives in three different ways: by sight, smell and taste (Yes taste!). In sight, it's the colors you surround yourself with, like your clothing, home decor, or car. With smell, we are drawn to specific scents and each scent relates to a color (essential oils have been especially designed for Color Therapy for this reason). For taste, sometimes we pick foods based on their color (lemon pie, green salad or even an orange).

If you've ever picked out an outfit the night before and the next morning your reaction to the same outfit was, "What was I thinking?" Well, say the outfit was Blue. Maybe yesterday you needed that color to balance your energies, but today you are drawn to Red. Our subconscious pays attention to these color urges, which can drastically improve our moods and well being.

For example: A male client came into my salon, and I asked him if he would like to try some Color Therapy. He agreed, and I began applying essential oils and inquiring about his need for color in the areas of sight, smell and taste. He picked a lot of different colors, but left out Orange. When I questioned why he didn't select the color, he said he ate two oranges on the way over. His need for Orange had already been satisfied and now his subconscious was seeking out other colors. I was able to re-balance my client's color needs and as a result, he left my chair feeling completely renewed!

L'ANZA: What Becomes An Educator Most?

This week's entry comes from Level III Educator Daniel Benschoter. In addition to his presence as a platform artist, Daniel is one of a few key "trainers" of new L'ANZA educators. From April 19-22 I was fortunate to work with Kelly Kindrick, fellow L'ANZA Education Team member, and a group of aspiring Level 1 Educators. This was the first time L'ANZA has combined the Color and Liquid trainings into one three and a half day dual certification, and we were prepared for the challenge.

Kelly and I presented the L’ANZA message, giving this group an in-depth look into the wonderful world of L’ANZA Healing Haircare. We drilled them with the finer points of the Keratin Healing System, the Keratin Bond System 2, the Flower Shield Complex, and the ins and outs of L’ANZA Healing Color. The sheer amount of information presented was mind boggling. The participants in this class were put through the gauntlet, and attempted to wrap their heads around Nano Science, color theory and chemistry, the art of public speaking, and color perception.

When we reached our hands-on color segment, out came the mannequins. As you know, working with mannequins can be somewhat of a mixed bag. On one hand, mannequins provide a safe place to learn and experiment and are invaluable tools to stylists. On the other hand, sometimes you get a batch with inferior hair, which are very difficult to color and cut. These mannequins fell into the latter category. The color, despite proper formulation, did not show well on the very processed mannequin hair. However, this did not stop our intrepid team of aspiring Level 1 Educators. They refused to give up, applying and reapplying until the color was right. Kelly and I were extremely proud of their commitment to success, and their faith in their own knowledge of color theory. It was so gratifying to watch them put what they had learned over the two previous days into action.

Someone once told me that an educator or teacher cannot make you a great hairdresser. One becomes a great hairdresser by wanting to improve every time they set foot behind the chair. It takes perseverance, commitment, honesty with oneself and a willingness to step up to any challenge. As I have progressed in my own career, I have tried to remember and put this advice into action. Over this last training, I have been able to see the truth of that advice. Kelly and I did not make these folks great hairdressers – they have done that themselves.
